The Installation Process
The environmentally philanthropic eco-tourism program begins with a 1-2 day solar installation training in a centrally located supplier's location or headquarters, and is followed by travel to the remote community location and an installation period ranging from 8 to 15 days. The volunteer travels to the site in the company of an HLF or host country partner staff and technician, who serve as guide, translator and technical support to assure proper final system operation. The technician oversees each installation and checks each system before the final connections are made. The volunteer program emphasizes cross-cultural exchange and during the installations participants stay with local families and should be prepared to forgo creature comforts for several days. Accommodation is often simple and shared food comprised of local fare, typically eaten along side the host families. Throughout the trip, the volunteer has multiple opportunities to visit cultural, historical and natural sites, and the program concludes with a village thanks celebration of the successful installation.
HLF or its host-country partners coordinate all transportation, accommodation, guides, technicians and most food for the volunteer for the duration of the program is included in the total program cost. The volunteer is responsible for selecting and paying for his/her own flight to the country and so they have the opportunity to extending their stay beyond the actual installation program period . As many volunteers do choose to extend their stay in the community or in surrounding areas, HLF can also assist the volunteer(s) with arrangement of ongoing travel plans or other volunteer opportunities upon completion of the program.
