The GEF Strategic Project: An HLF South Asia Program

HLF has commenced a Global Environment Facility Strategic project called: Consolidation and Expansion of innovative RET promotion and dissemination approaches for outreach to vulnerable populations. This program has been made available through UNOPS has is operaitng with partners in three South Asia Regional country partners namely the Himalayan Light Foundation (HLF) in Nepal , (the lead NGO), Sewalanka Foundation in Sri Lanka, and two partners in India, Jagriti of Himanchal Pradesh and CRTC Arunachal region department respectively. more»

Home Employment Lighting Program (HELP ™)

HELPTM is a multi-faceted program operated by the Himalayan Light Foundation which intrinsically combines the dissemination and use of solar lighting systems with income generation and barter-based micro finance for the poorest of Nepali villagers. Villagers participating in HELPTM are offered skill-training, the tools to set up an income generating activity such as knitting, weaving, handmade paper products, thangka painting, etc. and a solar electricity system, which extends the working day into the night by adding light to villager's homes. Marketable products are made in the home in the villager's spare time at night and sold in both local and international markets to help the families gain income and also pay for their family's solar lighting system.more»

Travelling Education Center

The TEC is a portable solar-powered multi-media unit, designed and developed to educate, entertain and inform the villagers in remote areas through the use of an audio-visual medium, with the aim of exchanging education for community participation, resource mobilization and empowerment. The TEC team travels to selected remote areas of Nepal to deliver its messages to villagers who need it the most. Due to the high level of illiteracy, the visual medium is one of the best methods to educate viewers in Nepal.more»

Renewable Energy Travelling Education Center (RETEC™)

The RE-TEC functions under the same modality as the TEC above but focuses on disseminating renewable energy technology information. RE-TEC is often used by The Himalayan Light Foundation to mobilize communities by showing visual images of technologies and programs. RE-TEC has been used in both Nepal and Sri Lanka by the partner organization Sewalanka Foundation.more»

Electric Vehicle

The 10th five-year plan of His Majesties Government of Nepal (HMG/N) calls for ample support of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for pollution mitigation in Nepal cities. Solar Powered Ozone Water Treatment System (SPOWTS™)

Solar Powered Ozone Water Treatment Systems or SPOWTS® for short uses small solar photovoltaic (solar PV) systems to provide completely pathogen free clean drinking water for tourists and villages especially in the Himalayan region. By combining the use of Solar PV with the income generating activity of selling clean drinking water to tourists the solar system sustainability is completely assured along with a new (and substantial) cash income for the system owners.more»

Revolving Electrification and Income Enterprise Fund (RELIEF™)

RELIEFTM is a revolving fund designed to support the start up of any village activity that uses environmentally friendly energy for income generation and productive end-use purpose such as SPOWTSTM, HELPTM or other handicraft productions or other village based services such HELP, SPOWTS or the Himalayan Amchis use of solar lighting for remote area herbal doctors' clinics. The fund has been commenced and so far has distributed US$30,000 of systems to over 150 villagers. HLF is seeking RELIEFTM expansion up to US$250,000 by 2008.more»

The South Asia Regional NGO Consortium for RETs and Poverty Reduction
Based on the success of the two initial rounds of the HLF South Asia Regional NGO consortium, and the current GEF UNOPS Strategic Fund, an HLF delegation has traveled to Sri Lanka to help our Sri Lankan partner, Sewalanka Foundation, (SLF) commence the implementation of the Home Employment and Lighting Package (HELP) in an SLF- Selected village. more»
